Taekwondo tenets

Tae Kwon DO Tenets

  1. Courtesy (Ye Ui): Courtesy in Taekwondo refers to showing respect, politeness, and consideration towards others. It encompasses treating fellow practitioners, instructors, opponents, and even oneself with kindness and dignity. Practicing courtesy helps foster a positive and harmonious training environment, encouraging mutual respect and understanding among practitioners.
  2. Integrity (Yom Chi): Integrity in Taekwondo emphasizes honesty, moral principles, and upholding a strong sense of ethics. It involves acting with sincerity, truthfulness, and reliability in all aspects of training and life. Practicing integrity cultivates trust, credibility, and accountability, forming the foundation of honorable conduct both on and off the training mat.
  3. Perseverance (In Nae): Perseverance in Taekwondo embodies the quality of steadfast determination and unwavering commitment to achieving goals despite challenges and setbacks. It involves maintaining resilience, courage, and tenacity in the face of adversity, setbacks, or obstacles encountered during training or in life. Practicing perseverance builds mental fortitude, resilience, and the strength to overcome difficulties on the path to personal growth and success.
  4. Self-Control (Guk Gi): Self-control in Taekwondo refers to the ability to regulate one's thoughts, emotions, and actions with discipline and restraint. It involves maintaining composure, avoiding impulsive behavior, and exercising moderation in all situations, especially during training and sparring. Practicing self-control fosters discipline, focus, and mindfulness, enabling practitioners to act with clarity and purpose while maintaining respect for themselves and others.
  5. Indomitable Spirit (Baekjul Boolgool): Indomitable spirit in Taekwondo embodies an unconquerable willpower and a resilient attitude that refuses to be defeated, regardless of the circumstances. It involves facing challenges with courage, determination, and a positive mindset, even in the face of adversity or failure. Practicing indomitable spirit instills confidence, perseverance, and a never-give-up attitude, empowering practitioners to overcome obstacles and achieve their highest aspirations.

These five tenets are not only fundamental principles of Taekwondo but also serve as guiding principles for personal development, promoting moral character, and fostering a balanced and harmonious lifestyle.
